Common mistakes when starting out on the trail: what no one tells you and what everyone makes

July 13, 2025

Trail riding isn't just a way of riding: it's a philosophy of life. For those of us who practice it, it's the perfect blend of adventure, technique, nature, and freedom. But that same freedom can become a problem if we don't prepare properly. Many people jump into the world of trail riding without training, without knowing how to adjust their bike, or without the proper equipment. The result: frustration, unnecessary crashes, and unpleasant experiences.

This article is for you, who are taking your first steps in trail riding. Here you'll discover the most common mistakes and how to avoid them, based on the experience of professional instructors like Javier Monje , Dakar racer, and José Cuenca , a specialist in child training, both members of our team at EscuelaTrailRMMotos.com .

Common mistakes when starting out on the Trail

1. Thinking that Trail is the same as Enduro

Typical mistake: "I've already done some Enduro, this Trail is easier." Nothing could be further from the truth.

Why it's a mistake: Trail riding has its own unique technique. It's neither asphalt nor Enduro. You're riding a heavier bike, with different geometry and a different suspension travel. If you use Enduro techniques, you'll end up exhausted or on the ground.

Solution: Specific trail training. That's why we have our Trail Beginner's Course (CIT) . Because mastering a maxi-trail is a different story.

2. Not adapting the driving position

Typical mistake: You drive standing up without bending your legs, tense arms, stiff back.

Why it's a mistake: Trail running requires your body to be an active part of your balance. If your posture is incorrect, you won't have control.

Solution: Learn the correct "Trail stance": feet parallel, toes pointed, knees slightly bent, back straight, and arms relaxed. We teach this in all our courses.

3. Starting with a motorcycle that is too heavy

Typical mistake: “I bought a 1250GS to learn.” A textbook error.

Why it's a mistake: Maxi-trails are amazing, but they're not the easiest to learn on. They're tall, heavy, and demanding. If you're inexperienced, you can quickly get frustrated.

Solution: Start with a lighter bike, like a Yamaha Ténéré 700, KTM 390 Adventure, or even a Honda CRF300L if you're learning pure technique.

4. Using inappropriate tires

Typical mistake: Using 90/10 or road tires on dirt tracks.

Why it's a mistake: Grip changes completely off asphalt. A mixed or studded tire radically improves traction and safety.

Solution: Get informed and choose based on the terrain. In our courses, we explain which tire is ideal for your type of ride.

5. Not adjusting tire pressure

Typical mistake: Using the same pressure as on the road.

Why it's a mistake: Trail riding requires more contact surface area. High pressure causes you to bounce and lose traction.

Solution: Lower the pressure for moderate off-roading (1.5-1.8 bar), always within safe limits and with a chamber/boost if necessary.

6. Underestimating protective equipment

Typical mistake: “I’m only going to an easy trail, jeans and a normal jacket are enough.”

Why it's a mistake: The ground can't tell if the slope is easy. A fall can have serious consequences without proper protection.

Solution: Use CE-certified protective gear, trail/enduro-specific boots, a full-face helmet, and reinforced gloves. At EscuelaTrailRM, we'll teach you how to equip yourself according to your level.

7. Not taking a beginner's course

Typical mistake: “I learn on my own, watching videos on YouTube.”

Why it's a mistake: Without personalized correction, you'll repeat mistakes and acquire bad driving habits.

Solution: Take a course like our CIT. In just one day, you can learn more than in a year of self-study. And it's fun too!

8. Not knowing the motorcycle or its settings

Typical mistake: Not knowing how to adjust the suspension, or what each button does.

Why it's a mistake: The bike may not behave as it should, and you'll think you're doing something wrong, when the problem is technical.

Solution: Learn how to adjust the suspension, handlebar height, traction control, and riding modes. At TrailRM School, we dedicate part of the course to this.

9. Not respecting the land or the environment

Typical mistake: Entering prohibited paths or making unnecessary skids.

Why it's a mistake: It spoils the environment and reflects poorly on all other bikers in the countryside. It can lead to fines and conflicts with neighbors or hikers.

Solution: Respect the signs, drive with common sense, and use apps like Wikiloc, TET, or local IGNs.

10. Going out alone without warning or preparation

Typical mistake: Making a route without telling anyone or planning it.

Why it's a mistake: If something happens to you, no one will know where you are. Plus, you might not have coverage.

Solution: Use apps with real-time tracking, carry a power bank, and always let someone know before you leave.

11. Not carrying basic tools or spare parts

Typical mistake: “It’s okay, if the tire gets punctured I’ll call for help.”

Why it's a mistake: In the field, there's sometimes no coverage or traffic. A breakdown without tools can be an ordeal.

Solution: Always carry a tool kit, patches or wicks, a pump or CO₂, a quick-release chain link, and zip ties. At EscuelaTrailRMMotos.com, we provide a complete list of essential tools for each course.

12. Not knowing how to lift the motorcycle correctly

Typical mistake: Trying to lift the motorcycle with your back or from the handlebar side.

Why it's a mistake: You can easily injure yourself. Plus, if you're alone or on steep terrain, it can be impossible.

Solution: Learn the "butt-to-seat" technique, using your legs, back straight, and lateral support. We practice this in the courses with different motorcycle weights.

13. Believing that everything is extreme off-roading

Typical mistake: Thinking that trail riding means doing wheelies, impossible trials, or rivers every weekend.

Why it's a mistake: Trail riding is about endurance, exploration, and technique. You don't need an enduro track to enjoy it. That idea leads to frustration and accidents.

Solution: Enjoy the slopes, explore nature, and train progressively. There's no rush to become Toni Bou.

14. Relying on simple clues

Typical mistake: Going relaxed on a fast, straight track.

Why it's a mistake: A rock, pothole, or sand trap can sneak up on you in seconds.

Solution: Always drive carefully, even on easy terrain. Keep your eyes open and anticipate.

15. Not learning to brake on the ground

Typical mistake: Using the brakes as if on the road.

Why it's a mistake: Grip on dirt is limited. If you brake hard, you'll fall to the ground.

Solution: Learn how to combine the front and rear brakes, how to use off-road ABS, and how to perform controlled braking. Our courses offer real-life training.

16. Not knowing how to manage technical descents

Typical mistake: Going down with the clutch held or only the front brake.

Why it's a mistake: You can lose traction, lock the wheel, and fall.

Solution: Use the rear brake and engine brake, leave the gear engaged, and maintain an active position. Downhill riding is taught step by step in the CIT.

17. Forgetting hydration and nutrition

Typical mistake: Not bringing water or eating all day.

Why it's a mistake: Trail running demands energy. Dehydration affects your concentration and reaction time.

Solution: Use a Camelbak-type hydration pack and bring bars, nuts, or bananas. During the courses, we take strategic breaks to recharge.

18. Not checking the motorcycle before leaving

Typical mistake: Leaving without checking the oil level, chain tension, or tire condition.

Why it's a mistake: A simple check can prevent a breakdown in the middle of the woods.

Solution: Create a routine: tire pressure, levels, visible bolts, brake pads, lights. At EscuelaTrailRMMotos.com, we provide a downloadable checklist.

19. Not training your fitness

Typical mistake: Thinking that riding a trail bike is like riding a road bike.

Why it's a mistake: It requires strength, endurance, and balance. If you're out of shape, you'll notice it immediately.

Solution: You don't need to be an athlete, but you do need to stay active. Walking, swimming, or doing functional exercises makes a difference. At EscuelaTrailRM, we promote trail running as a healthy way of life.

20. Thinking that Trail is only about technique and not head

Typical mistake: Obsessing over controlling the bike and forgetting about your surroundings or your actual level.

Why it's a mistake: Trail riding is also a good way to enjoy it with your head in mind. Knowing when to stop, when to avoid an obstacle, or when to stop taking risks is part of being a good rider.

Solution: Learn to read the terrain, plan your rides, and listen to your body and your bike. We also teach this to our students.
