The Dakar Rally, originally known as the Paris-Dakar Rally, is one of the most exciting and challenging motorsport competitions in the world. With a rich history spanning decades, this iconic event has evolved over time and captured the imagination of motorsports enthusiasts and adventurers from around the world.

The Dakar Rally has its roots in the Abidjan–Nice Rally , which was first held in 1977. Thierry Sabine , a passionate French racer and adventurer, entered this competition and was fascinated by the beauty and challenge of crossing the African continent in an all-terrain vehicle. During the rally, Sabine got lost in the Ténéré Desert and had an eye-opening experience. It was then that he had the vision of creating a competition that would take adventurers and racers through the African deserts to the city of Dakar, Senegal. This vision became a reality in 1978 with the inaugural Paris–Dakar Rally.



The First Edition


The first edition of the Paris-Dakar Rally began on December 26, 1978, with more than 180 participants ready to embark on an epic adventure that would take them through deserts, dunes, and challenging terrain. The original route took competitors from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal, passing through a variety of African countries. The rally combined the thrill of competition with the spirit of exploration.

French driver Cyril Neveu won the inaugural Paris-Dakar Rally in the motorcycle category. In the car category, the team of Alain Génestier, Joseph Terbiaut, and Jean Lemordant won aboard a Range Rover.



The Development of the Rally


Over the years, the Paris-Dakar Rally became a legendary competition that challenged participants in terms of navigation, endurance, and driving skills. However, due to safety concerns in Africa, the rally had to change its location and moved to South America in 2009, where it remained until 2019.

Change of Location to South America (2009) : Due to safety concerns in Africa, the Paris–Dakar Rally had to change its location in 2009. Instead of Africa, the competition moved to South America, specifically Argentina and Chile. This change allowed the competition to continue its legacy of adventure and challenge while exploring new landscapes and terrain.

Category Expansion and Global Participation: Over time, the Paris-Dakar Rally (which later became the Dakar Rally) expanded its categories to include motorcycles, cars, trucks, quads, and light vehicles. Participation became global, attracting competitors and teams from around the world. This made the competition even more diverse and competitive.

Rules and Safety: As the Dakar Rally grew in popularity, so did the focus on improving safety and regulations. Stricter rules were introduced to ensure the safety of participants, and measures were implemented to reduce the competition's environmental impact on fragile ecosystems along the route.

The Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia (Since 2020): In 2020, the Dakar Rally moved again, this time to Saudi Arabia. This new location has revitalized the competition, offering a variety of challenges on desert terrain that maintain the essence of the Dakar Rally. The competition remains an internationally renowned annual event and continues to attract the world's best drivers and teams.



Saudi Arabia and the Current Dakar Rally


After years of being held in Africa and then South America, the Dakar Rally changed its location to Saudi Arabia in 2020. This decision was the result of a collaboration between Dakar organizers and the Saudi government, which sought to promote the country as a destination for extreme sports and adventure.

Saudi Arabia saw the Dakar Rally as an opportunity to promote tourism and open the country to the world. Furthermore, the Saudi government pledged to ensure the safety of participants and protect the natural ecosystems in the competition area.

The Saudi Arabian courses have taken competitors through stunning desert landscapes, such as the Rub' al Khali Desert , known as the " Empty Desert ," and the rocky dunes of Al-Qiddiya. Each year, organizers design a challenging course that includes stages across a variety of terrain.

DAKAR RALLY CATEGORIES

Motorcycles

Motorcycles are one of the most exciting and iconic categories of the Dakar.
Riders compete on off-road motorcycles specially designed to tackle a variety of terrain, from deserts to mountains and rocky trails.
Navigation is essential, as pilots must find their way using maps and navigation devices, without the aid of GPS.
This category highlights the physical and mental endurance of the pilots, as they travel long distances and face extreme conditions.


Cars

The car category includes off-road vehicles specially prepared for competition.
Teams consist of a driver and a co-driver, who are responsible for navigation and strategy during the race.
Dakar cars are modified to withstand difficult terrain and are equipped with advanced navigation systems.
This category often features renowned factory teams and drivers.


Trucks

The trucks are giants of the road, adapted to compete in the Dakar.
Truck crews include drivers, co-drivers, and mechanics, as trucks may require repairs along the way.
Trucks are ideal for transporting large amounts of equipment and supplies, making them essential in competition logistics.
The trucks can tackle extremely difficult terrain and are an impressive sight on the Dakar stages.


Quads

Quads are four-wheeled vehicles specially adapted for the Dakar.
Quad riders face similar challenges as motorcycle riders, but have the added stability of four wheels.
This category is known for its speed and agility on varied terrain.


Light Vehicles (SSV - Side by Side Vehicles):

Light-duty vehicles, also known as SSVs, are off-road vehicles similar to buggies or UTVs.
These vehicles are smaller than traditional cars, but offer great maneuverability and off-road capability.
SSV teams include a driver and co-driver and compete in their own category at the Dakar.


Classics (S1/S2):

In addition to the main categories, the Dakar often includes a category for classic or historic vehicles (T1) and a production category (T2).
Classic vehicles are old cars or trucks that have been restored and prepared for racing, adding a nostalgic touch to the event.
Production vehicles are less modified versions of production vehicles that compete in a separate category.

Categories and Classifications: The Dakar is divided into several categories, including motorcycles, cars, trucks, quads, and light vehicles (SSV). Each category has its own rules and classifications. Competitors compete for victory in their specific category, and there is also an overall classification covering all vehicles.

Stages and Navigation: The rally is made up of multiple stages covering a long distance across varied terrain. Each stage has a defined start and finish, and participants must complete the route within a specific time. Navigation is a key element, and teams must follow the instructions provided in the roadbook and waypoints to find their way.

Controlled Speed: Speed ​​limits are in place at some stages to ensure the safety of participants and local communities. Vehicles must maintain controlled speeds in these areas.

Technical Assistance: Teams may receive technical and mechanical assistance only in designated areas, called "service zones." Outside of these zones, drivers and co-drivers must carry out their own repairs in the event of a breakdown.
