Passing the MOT on a Trail Bike: Complete Guide According to the New Regulations
June 11, 2025
AtEscuelaTrailrmMotos.com, we constantly receive questions about accessory approval and the problems that can arise when passing the MOT (Inspection) on a trail bike equipped for adventure.
We're going to explain in clear and detailed detail how to pass the MOT (Inspection) on your Trail bike according to the new modification manual published at the end of 2022. If you've ever wondered whether your fenders, footrests, or handguards could be a reason for rejection, this article is for you.
What you need to know about the new reform manual and its impact on trail bikes
The good news is that the new vehicle modification manual, officially published in 2022, has brought significant improvements for trail enthusiasts. Until recently, any modification to certain components could entail undergoing a homologation process or even being rejected at the MOT. But now, thanks to the changes introduced, several accessories are no longer considered modifications.
This means you can install certain components without having to visit an engineer, go through a laboratory, or make any changes to the vehicle's technical specifications. The goal of this reform is to reduce bureaucratic burdens and make it easier to adapt motorcycles to more specific uses, such as trail or adventure touring.
Accessories that no longer require approval for the MOT
Below, we detail the most common elements on a trail bike that are no longer considered a modification:
1.Approved folding rearview mirrors
You can replace your original mirrors with folding ones (for example, dual-joint ones), as long as they're approved and installed on the motorcycle's original mount. This type of mirror is ideal for off-road riding, as it reduces the risk of breakage in the event of a fall.
2.Bumper bars
Installing crash bars, such as those from Outback Motortek or other brands, is permitted as long as they are mounted on the original frame mounts and do not exceed the width of the motorcycle (generally determined by the width of the handlebars). This is key to protecting the engine and fairing without getting into trouble at the MOT.
3.Off-road footpegs
You can replace the original footpegs with wider, lighter, and foldable ones, like the CrossCountry ones. However, they must be anchored to the original support. These footpegs improve grip and comfort when riding standing up.
4.Detachable luggage system
Suitcases, top cases, saddlebags, tank bags, and luggage racks are no longer considered a modification, provided they are attached to approved and removable supports. This is especially important for travelers.
5.Non-original handguards
Aluminum-framed handguards, such as Barkbusters, are also acceptable, as long as they do not interfere with other safety features.
6.Heated grips
They're becoming more common and don't require approval. Improve your comfort without worrying about the MOT.
7.GPS and mobile phone holders
Mounts like those from SP Connect can be freely installed as long as they do not obscure the instrument panel or structurally modify the handlebars.
8.Additional switches and indicators
Elements such as tire pressure indicators, alarms, or thermometers do not require approval if they are properly integrated and do not alter the original electrical structure.
Tips for passing the MOT with your trail bike
Although the regulations are more permissive, it is advisable to follow certain recommendations to avoid problems during inspection:
✅Check the status of all items
Check that all components (lights, brakes, tires, suspension) are in good condition and have no play. Tires must have a load and speed index equivalent to or higher than the one indicated on the technical data sheet.
✅Do not wear loose or poorly installed accessories
Everything must be securely fastened. If a suitcase rattles or a handrail becomes loose, you may be asked to remove it.
✅Clean the motorcycle well
It may seem silly, but a clean motorcycle conveys a positive image and reduces the likelihood of a more rigorous inspection. It also makes chassis numbers easier to access.
✅Bring complete documentation
Vehicle registration, vehicle data sheet, and valid insurance. If you have any modifications not covered, please provide a compliance report or approval certificate.
✅Consult withEscuelaTrailrmMotos.com

Aspects still subject to reform
Although the regulations have improved, there are modifications that are still considered reforms:
Replacing the exhaust with one that is not approved or one that exceeds the emission or decibel limits.
Installation of additional non-approved or poorly positioned LED lights.
Modification of the handlebar outside the established measurements.
Changes to the brake or suspension system that affect the geometry of the motorcycle.
ITV and differences by autonomous community
One point of confusion is that, although the renovation manual is national, each ITV station can apply certain different criteria. The autonomous communities have some leeway for interpretation, and it also depends on whether the center is located in a large city or a small town.
Therefore, some centers may accept certain accessories without a problem, while others may have issues. AtEscuelaTrailrmMotos.com,we always recommend calling the center where you're going to have your vehicle checked beforehand to confirm their opinion on a specific accessory.
Real cases from the Trail community
🚜José Manuel, BMW F850GS with crash bars and GPS
"I thought I was going to have to dismantle everything, but I got through without a problem. The technician told me that as long as everything was properly anchored and certified, there was no problem."
🚜Lucía, Honda Africa Twin with CrossCountry footpegs
"I was told the footboards were larger than normal, but since they were mounted on the original support and were foldable, they didn't consider them a renovation."
🚜Antonio, Yamaha Tenere 700 with Barkbusters handguards
"I had to explain that the handguards were approved and made of reinforced aluminum. Once they saw it was securely fastened, they didn't say anything."
